My work is very textural and predominantly uses mixed media techniques. Organic materials and natural forms inspire my practice and are informed by primary and secondary research.

Overall, the focus of my work often reflects the disturbing aspects of nature, which we often don't notice. This may take the form of skin diseases, dirty hands, gangrene or the after effects of a nuclear fallout. I take the viewer to what they think maybe a colourful, pretty piece of work, but on reflection it is the disturbing aspects of a world we don't see which is most significant.

The artist's that have been most influential to me are street artist Slinkachu, and the sculptor Ron Mueck. Much of my work challenges or abstracts perspective as well as viewers preconceptions. Like these artists, I aim to push the boundaries of my subject in order to force a reaction from the audience.

Ceramic Box

Inspiration for this project came from my research about crocodile skin which informed the texture used to create this ceramic box. I used highly textured surfaces to imprint deep crevices and fissures into the surface of the clay.

Bacteria project

My research for this project came from looking under the beds of teenage boys for cups and plates and discovering mould and caked on food clinging to the crockery. This took my research into organic forms and led me to look at old drain pipes, tropical diseases and mouldy bread.

Towers

.
These pots have been thrown and reassembled to create towers. My inspiration came from the observation of buildings. The patternation, asymmetry and undulated surfaces create a very tactile surface quality and represent something I would like to expand on in the future.

Bubble Wrap, PVA and Inks.

This piece has bright striking colours and textures, incorporated large and clearly visible areas, complimented by more obscure, hidden areas. I find the combination of textures, shapes and colours particularly stimulating and i am keen to investigate this in the future.

Tea Set and Soup Bowls (pink)

The design of this tea set is based on the frenzied lighting of city scapes at night. The surface effects were produced by sponging rose coloured slip over the pots before overlaying strips of masking tape to act as a resist. After blowing through a difuser to add a fine film of glaze firstly in mid blue and then in green, the tape was removed to reveal a surface pattern.

Fabric Weaved Basket.

This delicate looking woven bowl has unique character. Based on bacteria it entwines itself around the armature and is soft and comfortable; almost nurturing. This reinforces the agenda; how bacteria misleads its host and deviously conquers its environment.

Metal Face

I wanted to create a sense of ambiguity with this peace. Questioning what it would be like to be in someone elses head, seeing how and what they see, or feeling their joy, loss or sense of self etc. Simultaineously sensuous and reppellant it represents both a serene and medetative state, whilst at the same time capturing a nightmare and feeling of entrapment.

Spider and Fly

Spider and fly project
This project investigated into role reversals within nature. The fly becomes the predator and the spider becomes the prey. There is also a beetle on the branch with a knife and fork preparing to lunch on the lizard. At the bottom of the painting there is a human curled up and cornered by a grasshopper that is about to devour him.

Lighting system

Based on cabbage leaves, these textural panels made from ceramics, represent decaying organic matter. As the cabbages began to rot I started to notice a change in colour, smell and form and wanted to capture this fleeting stage of deterioration.

Mosaic.

Broken bits of ceramic have been used to create a mosaic representing movement and signs of life.

Chicken wire and paper pulp form

Chicken wire dropped in paper pulp. This work was inspired by the study of the common garden snail. The work is constructed from chicken wire, electrical wire wrapped in torn fabrics and finely woven copper wire threaded through the  armature. This is then dipped in paper pulp. The sculpture represents the emergance of the snail's body from its shell, mirroring my own growth in confidence.

Faces

Masks made from eggshells, onion skins, sunflower seeds, salt, metal foil, and ceramics, show facial disfigurment by creating slightly distorted forms and textures. My aim was to encourage viewers to question their own perceptions and self image inflated in importance by the growing influence of todays media.
